How does Spinal Decompression Therapy Differ from Standard Traction?
When the joints of the spine are irritated, the postural muscles around the spine react with spasm to prevent further damage. Normally, when a pull is applied to these joints, the body’s normal reaction is to pull in the opposite direction.
Most decompression devices have a sensitive computer feedback mechanism to overcome this phenomenon. Precise computer-controlled tension ensures that the appropriate disc level is gently and painlessly stretched, creating negative pressure in the disc. This facilitates an important physiological process known as “invasion,” which delivers fluids, nutrients and oxygen to the intervertebral disc and promotes vital blood flow.
Over time it helps to increase the height of the intervertebral disc, helps shrink the enlarged/ herniated disc and reduces pressure on the nerves causing pain. A typical course of treatment consists of approximately 20-30 sessions of spinal decompression.
